Christmas Gift

So Paul got me a Self Guiding Tracker: From anyone who has seen Total Recall, this might ring a bell . . .

This was the actual gift-

Now this is the scene from the movie. I am willing to bet $100, that the basis for the removal of the self removal of the tracking device was an olive picker upper. Fast forward to 55 seconds if you are in a rush.

back to blogging

Thought I would start posting again. Although I love the immediacy of Facebook, it just can't catch the nuances of mood and thought like a blog. And now that I have so many "friends" on Facebook, I would rather focus on a forum where I can update my closer friends on my life.

So, that said, Merry Christmas! This week has been incredibly busy. I took care of Neecy for a day, as she was a little too sick to go back to daycare. I fed her chocolate, which ended up all over her face.

Christmas Eve, I had to work, but Luis and I went out to a FABULOUS dinner at Bolla, in the Stoneleigh Hotel in Dallas. I got to dress up, and I wore the black shawl my mother made my for Christmas. We love the sous-chef, Curtis, who was in charge of the Christmas Menu and did an incredible job. Between the both of us, we tried everything. Had we had been at home, I would have LICKED the plate. It was so fabulous. I think Bolla has become "our restaurant."

Makes you feel good . . .

So these two people raised this lion cub who they named Christian, and sadly he got too big for them to take care of so they decided to release him to live as a wild lion. Well, in this footage, a year has passed and it looks like Christian's adapted to living with a pride of lions when his old friends come back to visit him. Watch closely and you can see the look of pure disbelief that dawns on his muzzle- it's awesome. ^_^ Next thing you know, we have a heart warming reunion. Not long after, members of Christian's pride approach and even they seem to accept Christian's human friends.

People are just stupid

Not that I have any political aspirations, but this post would kill them if I did. All stories in the last two days. I wonder how many didn't get picked on. I would gladly give up my rights to give birth as often as I like and be scrutinized by the government and determined to be competent if it stopped cases like these.

Why people should have a license before they procreate:

Fetus found on Continental Jet at IAH

Police: Woman Arrested After 4-Year-Old Found Weighing 10 Pounds

Parents pick prayer over docs; girl dies

You know, I just have to keep this up cause I can't f'ing believe it:

A Bellingham mother busted for duct-taping her two tots to chairs and posting pictures of their terror-stricken faces on MySpace [website] continues to care for the children, despite concerns for their safety.

American Idol

Okay, I have begun my American Idol obsession. I would have started last week with the top 12, but last season was such a disappointment. Sanjaya just screwed everything up by being so dang bad.

These are my favorites! (and yes I voted!)
David Archuleta- he is only 17!

Carly Smithson

Chikezie Eze

Amanda Overmyer

Syesha Mercado

Let's see who gets voted off tomorrow! I hope it isn't any of my favorites!

Obama and Race

Hubby and I just watched Obama's speech on race. It was beautiful, poignant, and historical. I find it very interesting that as a black man, he was able to be able to give such a informed analysis about race relations. He isn't mired in his black experience; he transcends it and is thus able to strike a chord in every American, not just the left-wing, granola eating, NPR listening nuts.

Why is this? Well lets take a look at his background.

Here he is as a baby with his mother. Obama's parents, Ann Dunham and Barack Obama Sr., met and married in Honolulu — a white woman from the mainland and a black man from Kenya.

He went to school in Hawaii at a private school, but you have to remember, that many ethnicities have been successful here, and his school was a multiethnic melting pot.

After that marriage failed, Obama, at age 6, left Hawaii to live for four years in Indonesia with his mother and Indonesian stepfather, Lolo Soetoro. In 1971, she sent Obama, then 10, back to Hawaii to be with his maternal grandparents mostly because she wanted him to receive his education at Punahou, which boasts a rigorous high school curriculum.

In his 1995 memoir, "Dreams From My Father," Obama recalls experiencing some discrimination growing up in the islands, such as when other kids laughed at his name. In my opinion kids, are kids. Teasing doesn't have to be racially motivated. I was teased about my name. But I am not black, but was it less hurtful? This comment seems to be a "reach" to create a common experience with the African American population of the United States.

"I tried to raise myself to be a black man in America, and beyond the given of my appearance, no one around me seemed to know exactly what that meant," he wrote.

But Obama acknowledges he wasn't growing up in the Jim Crow South or the housing projects of Harlem — he was in Hawaii, where his peers mostly treated him the same as others. I can guarantee that the Filipinos and the Portagees got it worst than he did.

Obama's grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, a bank vice president, and grandfather, Stanley Dunham, a salesman, lived in a two-bedroom apartment in downtown Honolulu and helped raise their grandson along with his mother until he graduated from high school.

Fake Steve and White Stuff

I read about 30 blogs a day. Most are political and techy, but here are two that just make me laugh. Thought I would share

The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs

A link to an article about the site.

Stuff White People Like
A site that lists and explains the things that white people like, such as expensive sandwiches (#63), religions their parents don't belong to (#2) and apologies (#55). Things yet to be added to the list: Ski boots, talking about Roth IRAs and decimating native populations.

A link to an LA Times article about the site.

Look for a post about the rodeo, coming up soon!

lazy notes

My mother just got back from New Zealand. So happy to have her back. I missed her lots! I had a dinner party as well, invited a high school girlfriend over with her husband who is a cop (always great to know a cop) and her two kids, Kiani who is 10, and Kipukai, who is 3. It still astounds me to see my friends with children, although many of them have them now (La'i, Razor, Annie, Dee).

Just spent the evening at my parents house, and I have Humane Society Duty tomorrow morning early, so I am going to spend the rest of my evening reading The Red and the Black and crocheting. G'night!

Okay, I am not a dog person, but I had a dream two nights ago that Luis gave me a Siberian Husky pupppy. And it was just adorable. Thought I would share my dream with you all.

10000 BC

10000 BC has to be the worst movie I have seen in a while. First of all, the lead character is just the wrong actor for the role. He can't carry the part. He ends up like a wuss who just gets everywhere in life my mistake or by people helping him out because they feel sorry for him or liked his father.

So apparently this multi-ethnic community that has Eskimos/American Indians, Maoris, blacks, and whites are this little clan living in the mountains and they refuse to travel to look for food, but instead wait for these mammoths to come once every couple of years. Of course they are attacked by another tribe which is composed of Arab men, who capture the hot girl, which for some reason likes the dorky guy. So dork boy goes on a conquest in search of her and himself, because everyone, including the old Eskimo lady who can see the future, thinks he is a dork and not a leader.

Then they ripped off a couple scenes from Jurrasic Park, and then added some animals that could never have met humans at all. You really have no idea what the main characters name is until he is about to try to get the girls back for the final time.

It is just retarded. Please don't waste your money.

Just haveing fun

Volunteer

Now that I am no longer working with MenuNetwork, I have decided to spend some free time volunteering. My excuse was that I never had enough time, but now I do, so no more excuses. Right now I am involved in three projects.

1) Hawaii Island Humane Society - I clean out all the cat litter boxes on Sunday, play with the kittens, and then I take all the dogs out for a run/walk. I listen to my ipod while I do this so I can broaden my literary horizons.

2) Hawaii has many feral cats. The weather is good, so they aren't killed off every winter. My island has a very strong spay and neuter program for feral cat so they don't propagate. The program is called Advocats, and volunteers go to specific locations around the island to feed the animals so they don't starve. So Thursday nights, I go to several locations around Costco to feed the animals. Some are so beautiful, I can't believe they don't have someone taking care of them.

On many occasions people put out food with rat poison to kill the cats, but they fail to recognize that feral cats are a HUMAN problem. It was humans who dumped them out here in the first place, either too lazy to find them a home, or for some reason didn't take them to the humane society.

3) The last thing I am doing is on my own time, but I am crocheting blankets for Project Linus. For the non-Americans or those who aren't familiar with Charlie Brown, Linus is the little blond who plays the piano and always carries a blanket around with him. The provide "love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.” I am a "blanketeer." Right now I am crocheting, but I hope to learn how to knit soon and make them with two sticks rather than one!

Okay, off to the Humane Society. Got some poop to clean, kittens to cuddle, and dogs to exercise!

update . . .

Just got back from the humane society. So much fun. I love playing with the dogs, some are so cuddly and wonderful, some are great at fetching, some are just plan so excited to be outside they can't focus on anything!

Snooty tooty

I am a Hillary fan. To be honest, Obama and Hillary are like Pepsi and Coke. You prefer one, but if the restaurant only has the other, it doesn't really matter. Here is an unflattering photo of Obama looking like such a snob. Probably just a bad moment. Or maybe that is how he always looks at Hillary when the cameras aren't flashing.

Back from the dead/Japan/sufing . . .

I have quit MenuNetwork, the online firm that I was helping. It was still in a very nascent mode, and working from Hawaii simply didn't make sense as monetary compensation was still far into the future. Therefore, I get to take trips, surf whenever I want, and work on a multitude of personal projects!

My brother made a commercial for them. Any comments please let me know!

I will detail them more as they come up in my own personal monologue, but I am really happy to be able to dedicate my days to myself. Already looking for employment for when I get back to Dallas (we will head out there in the middle of August), but I am going to take my GMAT and maybe my LSAT ( I know random, too random to explain) to keep my options open.

Listening to a book called Jessica by Bryce Courtenay. It is fabulous. He also wrote Brother Fish, which I highly highly recommend.

I thank Ellie and Sungi for updating their blogs, it is great to be able to find out waht is going with you both. Keep it up, and I will also keep up mine :)

Big in Japan!

Sungi's adventures in Japan have been keeping me entertained, and also revved me up to write a bit again. It is amazing how difficult it is to keep posting when no one else posts anything. I suppose people are reading, but with no comments and no replies, it feels like shouting into the wind: a waste of time.

So after pounds and pounds of soba, sushi, tempura, soup, and Ohhashi Omlette special, i am proud to say that all the weight I lost not drinking booze is back on my hips. But I enjoyed putting it there!

Will post some more, but for now, I am just gonna post some photos. Full screen is better than not. To get to full screen, just click on the scrapblog logo on the lower right-hand corner.

Undecided?

Going back to politics.

Super Tuesday is coming up. L is going for Obama baby, but I for some reason am inclined to go for Hillary. Although I just love Ron Paul so much, I might vote for him. I vote in Texas, which is always republican dominated, so my vote basically is for nothing.

Here are some cool things I dug up for the undecidedes:

For Tuugii

Sodo, if Tuugi comes to visit, tell him these are just a few of the things we will do!

Fly above the Volcano!

Teach him to to Paddle Surf, this is a video of my brother, Paul. I do it too! It is easy!

Snorkel during the day

We can snorkel this one, he doesn't need to know how to dive! The manta rays are harmless:)

We have horses too! We can go herd cattle!

See a show!

Let me know if his parents are going to let him him out of their sight for a week or so :) I wouldn't if I were them, he is too great! :)
Well, I haven't really blogged lately. It really is unmotivating to blog when no one else does, but since Sodo (who hasn't blogged for over a year), and Ellie both picked up again, I thought I would too. Won't do a summary since everyone knows what I have been up to since Facebook has been so popular among our circle.

I have been trying to figure out where to go with Luis. We both need a trip to get out of here, and I think we have settled on going to Japan in April. I wanted to go to India but with 30 hours of flying and 2k per ticket compared with 8hrs and 800, the price and time decided for us. We won't stay with Ellie, as her family has been through a lot lately and doesn't need house guests, and we want the freedom to go party until late or take a nap in the middle of the afternoon :) I think we are going to spend 4 days in Tokyo, and then spent the rest traveling all around.

I have been reading a lot lately, which has just been so wonderful for me. I used to read a lot, and then I listened to Audio books, but now I do both! I really miss reading. I am actually thinking about investing in Kimble, which is Amazon's new electronic book. You can keep 90 books in there ( I traveled to PR and took five books, and they were heavy!), download new ones anytime you want through cell phone technology, and it has a dictionary so if you come across a word you don't know, you can look it up instantly!

I am reading The Master and Margarita, one of most important pieces of protest literature coming out of Russia. It is great, the devil goes to Moscow and terrorizes the literary community.

My cats are wonderful, Pista is going through a Mamma's boy phase (he usually spends more time with his pappa, so I am enjoying his company when I take a nap or I am working on my computer. IT is lovely.

Well, that is it for the evening. I just watched "There Will Be Blood," which is phenomenal. Need to go digest
